What is the goal of Stand Up To Cancer?
Simply put, Stand Up To Cancer’s goal is to end cancer’s reign as a leading cause of death by raising funds to accelerate research that will help more people diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors.
SU2C is founded on the belief that in the field of cancer research there is a solid foundation and sufficient understanding of the basic science of cancer, and with the technologies available, now is the time to take that understanding to the next level by translating this knowledge to the clinic—to real advances in patient care and cancer prevention.
What is a Dream Team?
Dream Teams are multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional and collaborative groups of scientists that conduct novel, groundbreaking cancer research projects that address critical problems in patient care. Dream Teams are made up of the best scientists who are on the verge of critical discoveries that can provide direct patient benefit in the shortest time possible. What is an Innovative Research Grant?
The Innovative Research Grants program is the second major funding commitment made by Stand Up To Cancer, with the goal of supporting the next generation of cancer research leaders. The projects funded all represent new approaches to the most important and challenging problems facing cancer researchers today.
Who are SU2C’s donors; do they include any tobacco companies?
Stand Up To Cancer is not supported in any way by Big Tobacco. We have a broad range of donors who support SU2C’s accelerated cancer research. In addition to individuals, SU2C’s donors and collaborators include foundations (including the foundations of major companies), organizations, philanthropists, and a wide range of public-spirited corporations.
That support has enabled SU2C to establish a ground-breaking new approach to cancer research. Because of the generosity and profound commitment of our donors, in just six years, SU2C has funded 12 Dream Teams, two Translational Research Teams, and 26 Innovative Research Grants. These grant recipients include more than 800 researchers, representing 112 unique institutions in six countries. Collectively, these investigators have planned, launched, or completed 141 clinical trials, in which more than 5,700 patients have enrolled.
Tangible results benefiting patients include the development of a new combination treatment for pancreatic cancer, which is now a first-line therapy, and a promising new drug for the treatment of the most common subtype of breast cancer, as well as many others.
Who created Stand Up To Cancer?
Stand Up To Cancer was created by a group of women whose lives have all been affected by cancer in profound ways. In the fall of 2007, they began working together to marshal the resources of the media and entertainment industries in the fight against this disease. SU2C was formally launched on May 27, 2008. How will donations to Stand Up To Cancer be used?
100% of donations received from the general public support Stand Up To Cancer’s collaborative cancer research programs. We have partnered with the prestigious American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to provide scientific oversight and expert peer review, and administer Stand Up To Cancer grants, which fund:
- Dream Teams (multi-disciplinary and collaborative groups of scientists that will be responsible for conducting novel, groundbreaking cancer research projects that address critical problems in patient care and are designed to deliver near-term patient benefit). The research being done by the Dream Teams already at work has the potential to impact the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of cancers that are responsible for two thirds of the cancer deaths in the U.S.
- Individual innovative grantees conducting high-risk, potentially high-reward research projects that would often not be supported by conventional funding sources.
Is my donation to Stand Up To Cancer tax deductible?
Yes, your donation is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law and you will be given a receipt for U.S. tax purposes.

How much of my donation goes to the cause?
100% of your donation received by SU2C will support Stand Up To Cancer’s collaborative cancer research programs.
What will appear on my credit card statement?
When you make a donation by credit card, a charge to “Stand Up To Cancer” will appear on your credit card billing statement.

How do I find out if my employer offers employee matching contributions for Stand Up To Cancer?
Many companies encourage employees to support non-profit initiatives like Stand Up To Cancer by offering to match employee donations. Cause-Related Marketing Guidelines
Thank you for considering Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a charitable program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), as a beneficiary of your cause-related marketing promotion. We are grateful for your interest in supporting and raising awareness of our important cause.
SU2C strives to ensure that all of the cause-related marketing arrangements we participate in comply with best practices and legal standards. To this end, please take the time to review the below list of guidelines and ensure that you meet our requirements as a charitable beneficiary of your promotion.
If after reviewing these guidelines you would like to move forward, please request a cause-related marketing questionnaire to complete with details of your proposed promotion for our team to review. Please note that your proposed promotion is not authorized until we have a signed agreement with you.
Cause-Related Marketing Guidelines:
- SU2C requires that a company be established for at least one year before participating in a cause-marketing promotion. Exceptions may be made at SU2C’s discretion, for example, for a new product or product lines from an established company.
- SU2C works with companies striving to reach a broad audience, including their own customer base, through the cause-related marketing arrangement. SU2C does not work with companies simply seeking to target SU2C’s current supporters.
- A written contract with EIF on behalf of SU2C is required at least 45 days prior to the start of a cause-marketing promotion. Until a fully executed contract is entered into between a company and SU2C, use of SU2C’s name or logo is prohibited.
- SU2C requires a minimum guaranteed donation in connection with each cause-related marketing campaign. The amount of the guaranteed minimum may vary in SU2C’s discretion based on several considerations, such as the length of the promotion, your use of SU2C’s name and logo, and the amount you donate per product or service sold. A portion of the minimum guarantee may be due upon signing of our agreement.
- Several states regulate cause-related marketing activity (referred to as commercial co-ventures under most states’ laws). To conduct a cause-related marketing promotion, your company may need to register and/or file in states with regulatory requirements prior to the beginning of the promotion. SU2C will require your company’s strict compliance with all applicable state regulations. Seek the advice of legal counsel to ensure your company’s compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- In addition, SU2C complies with best practices and requires all cause-relating marketing promotions to adhere to these practices.
- In connection with applicable law and best practices, SU2C requires that a prominent and clear disclosure of how SU2C will benefit from the sale of your products or services is included on all packaging, advertising and promotional materials. SU2C will assist with recommending appropriate disclosure language for your promotion upon entering into a signed agreement. The disclosure must specify:
- The percentage or dollar donation amount per purchase or transaction that will benefit SU2C
- Any minimum or maximum guaranteed donation amount
- The length of the promotion
- SU2C must review and pre-approve your use of the SU2C name or logo on all products, packaging, advertising or promotional materials. If your company is creating products that include the SU2C name and logo, you will be required to follow our approval process procedures and submit for approval all products at the concept, pre-production and production stages.
- SU2C may publicly acknowledge your company’s support; however, as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, we cannot advertise or otherwise endorse any promotion or sell or otherwise promote products or services on behalf of our corporate supporters.
- SU2C does not secure or facilitate the participation of celebrities in cause-related marketing promotions.
About Fundraising Teams:
Why should I create or join a team?
Teams are another way to donate to SU2C. You can start your own fundraising team with your friends, co-workers, family members, or whomever you like. Learn more about group fundraising for SU2C.
Can I join someone else’s team?
When a team captain creates a team he or she can choose whether to have a password or open team. If the team was created without a password then other can join it. If the team was created as a password protected team then you must be invited or make a request to the team captain to join. You can look for a team by visiting our Find a Fundraiser page.
Fundraising Events - Getting Started:
I’d like to plan a fundraising event. How do I get started?
You can start by completing the Grassroots Fundraising Proposal. Once you fill this out completely, we will review your application. Please allow 10 business days for us to process your proposal.
I submitted my Grassroots Fundraising Proposal. How long will it take for someone to get back to me?
Please allow 10 business days for a representative from SU2C to respond to your Grassroots Fundraising Proposal. If your proposal is accepted, you will be given special instructions on how to sign up for your fundraising page. Your fundraising page will give you access to our Fundraising Toolkit that includes information and materials you can use to help get you started.
Am I required to create an SU2C online team for my fundraising event?
No. You are not required to set up an online team; however, we highly recommend it as it provides you with online tools to track your fundraising efforts and to help you share information about your event.
We have a great idea for an event! How soon do we need to contact SU2C prior to the event?
Please contact SU2C about your event no less than 30 days prior to the event.
I have a great idea for an event, but it’s not one of the event listed on the website. Can I create my own event?
We encourage you to be as creative as possible and to create a unique and personal event that shows how you, your school, your business and your entire community are standing up to cancer. The events on our website are only suggestions.
Can SU2C arrange for a celebrity or a representative from the charity to participate in my event?
We are incredibly grateful for the tremendous support of our SU2C grassroots fundraisers hosting events all over the country. Unfortunately, due to the volume of these events, we cannot personally participate or arrange for celebrities to participate in these events.
Can SU2C help with funding, planning or executing my event?
Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to assist with funding, planning or executing your event. However, we created a Fundraising Toolkit as a guide to help you plan your event and make it your own.
If a business donates goods or services to my event, will they receive a tax receipt from SU2C?
Unfortunately, we cannot generate a tax receipt for a business that donates goods and/or services to your fundraiser since the business did not directly donate to SU2C.
SU2C Fundraising Pages – Getting Started:
What is the difference between Personal and Team Fundraising?
You can register to manage a team or fundraise as an individual. If you decide to lead a team you have both a Team Page and a Personal Fundraising page.
You Personal Fundraising Page is a place for you to tell your story and seek donations for your team. You can set a goal separate from your team goal. Any donations received from your Personal Fundraising Page will apply to your overall team goal.
You Team Page gives you a place to set a larger fundraising goal and to recruit members to fundraise alongside you. All of the team member you get to sign up will have their own Personal Pages to drive their fundraising efforts. Any donations they receive will apply to your larger team goal.
You can manage both your Team and Personal Pages via your Participant Center. If you had a team in the older SU2C teams site, you will be setup to have both a Team and Personal Page. Your goal and fundraising efforts to date will be the same on both your Team and Personal Page, but you can update either goal at any time.
What is the difference between a password protected and an open fundraising team?
Teams can be set to require a password from registering team members. Open teams allow anyone to join the team. In addition, your team members can invite other members. Think of it as being the leader of a movement. An open team is perfect for fundraising with friends, family or a small group. In a password protected team the captain invites new members to the team and provides the password that allows others to sign up for the team.
What is a Team Page?
A Team Page is the page you send to recruit potential team members if you signed up to start a team. It’s a place to explain why you formed a team and to motivate others to fundraise alongside you. When you sign up to start a team we automatically create your public facing Team Page with a description of what SU2C does. Editing your page via your Participant Center and adding a photo or video will help motivate your loved ones to fundraise with you.
What is a Personal Page?
Your Personal Page is the page you send to potential donors when you ask for donations. It’s a place to tell your story and add a photo or video about why you are fundraising for SU2C. When you sign up for a team we automatically create your public facing page with a description of what SU2C does. Editing your page via your Participant Center will help make your requests for donations more personal.
Will I be able to see who donated to my Team or Personal Fundraising Page?
Yes. You will have the tools to see who donated to your team, when and how much.

What if a check is made out to me and not Stand Up To Cancer?
If a donor writes a check to you instead of SU2C at your fundraiser, please endorse the back of the check with your signature and add ‘Payable to SU2C.’ We will then provide a tax receipt to the account holder listed on the check.
Can I accept the bulk of donations and write one check to Stand Up To Cancer?
We do not recommend this for two reasons:
1. The IRS may consider this income and you could potentially be taxed.
2. Since the check is coming from you and not each donor, you will receive the tax receipt and not the donors.
It is best to have each donor write a check payable to SU2C for their desired amount, which you can then collect and mail in. SU2C will then be able to generate tax receipts for each donor.
Can I mail in cash donations collected at my fundraiser?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash donations. However, if you receive multiple cash donations from different donors at your fundraiser, please convert to a cashier’s check and mail to the below address. Be sure to include each donor’s amount donated and personal contact information (name/address) with the cashier’s check so we may provide a tax receipt to each donor.
